Applesauce Cake
Applesauce Cake

4 cups sifted flour
4 teaspoons baking soda
1 1/4 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 cup salad oil
2 cups sugar
3 cups unsweetened applesauce
1/2 cup each, raisins & chopped walnuts


Sift together flour, soda, salt, spices & cocoa.

In a large mixing bowl combine oil & sugar. Beat until well blended. Stir in hot applesauce blending thoroughly. Add dry ingredients, blending well. Stir in raisins and walnuts.

Turn batter into 2 well greased and floured 9″ pans.

Bake at 400° for 15 minutes. Then bake at 375° for 15 minutes longer. Cool pans on racks for 5 minutes. Remove from pans and complete cooling on racks.

Fill and frost with Caramel Frosting.

Caramel Frosting
1/2 cup butter
1 cup dark brown sugar, firmly packed
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups confectioners’ sugar

Melt over low heat. Stir in brown sugar and salt. Bring to a boil over medium heat; boil hard 2 minutes stirring constantly. Remove from heat, cool to lukewarm.

Stir in confectioners’ sugar & beat until smooth.

If frosting is too thick, beat in a little milk.
