  • 2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup shortening Crisco regular
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 1 cup sour milk or buttermilk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons iodized salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 4 1/2 cups regular flour
  • 1 cup Hershey's powdered cocoa


  • 2 large egg whites stiffly beaten
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 4 tablespoons flour
  • 4 tablespoons milk regular whole
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup shortening Crisco


Whoopie Pies:

  • Combine all ingredients in the order listed with a hand-mixer.....do not over mix, just mix until well combined
  • Drop by heaping teaspoonfuls onto greased cookie sheet....or use parchment paper; you should have 36 cookie halves
  • Bake at 400°F for 8 minutes and cool completely


  • Combine beaten egg whites and slowly add remaining ingredients...vanilla, flour, milk, sugar and Crisco.
  • Spread filling over 18 cookies about a half inch thick and gently cover with the other half
