Chocolate Applesauce Muffins

1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 3/4 cups sifted flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
1 1/2 (1 ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate, grated
1 1/4 cups unsweetened applesauce

Grease 3 6-cup muffin tins or enough for 18 muffins. Preheat oven to 375°F.

Cream together shortening and sugar in a bowl until light and fluffy, using electric mixer at medium speed. Add egg and beat well.

Stir together flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and allspice. Mix chocolate with dry ingredients.

Add chocolate mixture alternately with applesauce to creamed mixture, beating well after each addition.

Fill prepared muffin tins two-thirds full. Bake for 20 minutes or until done.
