2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg or allspice
1 cup brown sugar
1/4 to 1/2 cup green and red glace cherries, chopped
1/4 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup buttermilk or sour milk
1 egg, whisked
2 tablespoons melted butter
Combine flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder and nutmeg. Add sugar, mix well and add cherries and walnuts. Combine remaining ingredients and pour over the dry mixture. Stir quickly, just enough to blend. Pour into greased and floured 9 x 5 inch loaf pan. Let stand 20 minutes, then bake for 1 hour at 350°.
If you do not have sour milk, add 1 teaspoon of vinegar to 1 cup milk.
